I recently had an epiphany at a networking event at the Central Park Boathouse.
As I entered the room, I noticed that everyone was standing while juggling drinks, plates, handshakes and businesses cards. The place was crowded and loud, forcing you to shout at the person in front of you.
After a while, I began to wonder: were people really enjoying themselves? ( I know I wasn’t.) Were they really connecting or just going through the motions? Were they getting the results they wanted?
I decided to sit down and relax at one of the many empty tables–to break from the stiff standards, and stop the juggling act.
And, then, an amazing thing happened: People gradually started to join me.
They sat down at my table, and introduced themselves. We spoke about many things. It became like a small, intimate luncheon. We shared stories and made great connections. We enjoyed ourselves!
I realized that people were more relaxed and confident when seated in a smaller, more intimate group.
They were more productive, focused, and connected.
Everyone was helping each other.
That they felt better about the event—and themselves—when they left.
I realized that this was how to do business.
And this is how Business a la Carte begins.
